{"id":344,"date":"2018-06-27T22:59:28","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T22:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeisajourney.co.nz\/rur\/?page_id=344"},"modified":"2018-06-29T12:33:28","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T12:33:28","slug":"woodham-park","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lifeisajourney.co.nz\/rur\/woodham-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Woodham Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know the only Christchurch City Council aviary is in Woodham Park?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1lsh4Vz5k1N8jU_VXsDbz1iotdBYxZh4q&amp;ll=-43.52328960742092%2C172.66674401769615&amp;z=16\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Each pin is clickable and has more info\/links, + &amp; -, are in the bottom left hand corner, so you can zoom in\/out.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Click on the square with arrow, in the top left hand corner, to show\/hide map legend\/layers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Woodham Park comprises three major lawns, bordered by shrubs, and a variety of specimen trees in the English park style.<br \/>\nThe large collection of expansive mature trees include specimens of Daimio oak, trembling poplar, Chinese wingnut and slippery elm.<br \/>\nThe borders feature excellent examples of laurel and yew hedges, a variety of herbaceous plants interspersed with hydrangeas and camellias, and an outstanding collection of rhododendrons.<br \/>\nThe Park boasts the only aviary operated by the City Council, housing specimens of Java sparrow, ring-necked dove, native and exotic parakeet, quail and various finches.<br \/>\nThere is also a safe, sheltered children\u2019s playground with paddling pool and extensive play area.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a title=\"https:\/\/www.ccc.govt.nz\/parks-and-gardens\/gardens-and-heritage-parks\/woodham-park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ccc.govt.nz\/parks-and-gardens\/gardens-and-heritage-parks\/woodham-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.ccc.govt.nz\/parks-and-gardens\/gardens-and-heritage-parks\/woodham-park<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Woodham Park is a 2 hectare garden &amp; heritage park, and although it is 130m from the &#8216;Red Zone Futures&#8217; area, I think it should be included as a bird sanctuary\/butterfly habitat.<br \/>\nA sanctuary\/habitat in Woodham Park, could be a great educational resource for our locals and visitors to Christchurch.<br \/>\nThis attraction would also compliment my &#8220;River Bank Centre&#8221; idea, which is based at Avonside Girls&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>More food source plants could be planted to increase the population of our native birds and butterflies in Woodham Park.<\/p>\n<p>An enclosed smaller size version of the\u00a0Woodham Park Summer House, could be created as a butterfly house, to have a live display showing the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Educational signage could be added to help identify and learn about the different birds and butterflies that call Woodham Park home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;End of a Monarchy? Jacqui Knight is worried. The founder of the Monarch Butterfly New Zealand trust has just driven from Dunedin to Picton and is concerned at how few monarch butterflies she has seen.<br \/>\nMonarch butterflies are considered to be good indicator of the health of the environment. They are much easier to see than other insects.<br \/>\nWe might be looking out at hundreds of bees and other insects but don\u2019t see them unless they\u2019re up close.
